Properties and Applications

Thermoplastic urethanes (TPU) are low priced commercial thermoplastic elastomers. They are block copolymers consisting of alternating sequences of hard and soft segments formed by the reaction of diisocyanates with polyester or polyether diols (so-called chain extenders). They combine the characteristics of rubber with the processing advantages of thermoplastics. Like ordinary thermoplastic, they are melt-processable and can be injection, blow and compression molded. These transparent elastomers have high tensile and impact strength, good elasticity and low temperature flexibility. They also are highly resistant to abrasion, ozone, aliphatic solvents, and petroleum based fuels and oils.

TPU elastomers are used for a wide varriety of applications in many markets. Typical applications include footwear, hydraulic gaskets, synthetic leather, building materials, caster wheels, automotive instrument panels, power tools, gaskets, drive and timing belts, outer cases of electronic devices, and sporting goods.
