Styrene Methyl Methacrylate (SMMA)

Properties and Applications

Styrene methyl methacrylate (SMMA) is a clear amorphous thermoplastic. This type of copolymer has high transparency (cyrstal clarity), high rigidity, excellent scratch resistance, good chemical resistance (slightly higher than PMMA) and very low moisture absorption. It is relatively easy to process due to its excellent flow properties and molded parts show low residual stress.1 Impact-modified grades are also available to achieve superior mechanical properties, such as higher-impact resistance.

SMMA finds many applications in homeware, including water filters, water tanks, disposable razors, food containers, and drinkware. Due to its high transparency, it is also a good choice for optical applications such as displays.
Styrene Acrylics are also sold as emulsion products for concrete and roofing applications. They are used primarily as additives to adhesives, sealants, concrete, and coatings to improve or provide flexibility, heat sealability, and water resistance. Examples include architectural binder coatings, cement mortar and roof maintenance coatings.
