Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE)
Properties and Applications
Polychlorotrifluoroethylene (PCTFE) is a crystal clear, non-flammable, and semicrystalline high-performance thermoplastic that has exceptional moisture barrier properties, good heat and chemical resistance and excellent melt processability.
It offers a unique balance of mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties not
encountered in any other engineering
thermoplastic. The chlorine atom in the polymer structure reduces
the crystallinity, lowers the melting
point and provides stronger intermolecular interaction which results
in higher tensile strength, higher creep resistance and less water vapor and gas permeability compared to PTFE.
However, its chemical resistance and electrical properties are not as good as
those of PTFE, but are still better than those of most other thermoplastics.
PCTFE is mainly used as moisture protective film or coating in
pharmaceutical blister packaging due to its excellent water vapor barrier
properties and good chemical stability. Other applications include chemical resistant tubes, valves, tank liners, O-rings, seals and gaskets.
